Special Cover of Chauri Chaura Sahid Smarak

A Special cover issued on 19 May 1987 and shows the famous Chauri Chaura at Gorakhpur  associated with Gandhiji and India’s Freedom Struggle.
Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur District of Uttar Pradesh is associated with the freedom movement of the country. It is around 25 km south-east of Gorakhpur. Fed up with the repressive policies of the British, the villagers burned down a police station on 4th Feb 1922. This was in retaliation to the police firing on a procession of satyagrahis in Chauri Chaura. In this incident around 22 policemen were killed and Gandhi ji immediately called off the non-cooperation movement.
