Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur District of Uttar Pradesh is associated with the freedom movement of the country. It is around 25 km south-east of Gorakhpur. Fed up with the repressive policies of the British, the villagers burned down a police station on 4th Feb 1922. This was in retaliation to the police firing on a procession of satyagrahis in Chauri Chaura. In this incident around 22 policemen were killed and Gandhi ji immediately called off the non-cooperation movement.
